This printmaking I made explores the border between vision and mystery conflating the human form with the elements of nature in a dreamlike, surreal tableau. The center figure has her eyes open and piercing with an aura that blends with the surroundings of nature, assuming the archetype type of seer, which is being poised between realms of knowledge and mystery. The figure is based on Rosa Rolanda’s self-portrait in 1952, and I thought the figure looked so beautiful in that artwork that I wanted to contribute it to the nature going on in the background because I like to think that mother nature would be as beautiful as Rolanda. I used swirling lines and textured background to make a whirlpool of emotions and a crystal ball in the figure to symbolize the center is like a quest for clarity around the whirlpool of chaos happening in the background. The forest-like strokes in the background strokes give the feeling of being deep into the unknown as the figure is rooted in the wild landscape of the subconsciousness. I intended for this artwork to challenge the viewer to consider how much of what we persevere is shaped by illusion.
